Binational Program Birds without Paradise

The program, lasting 8 months, took place on both sides of the border, promoting the concepts of collaboration, teamwork, and freedom to further success in the development of the Mega Region (CaliBaja).

Vesta has sponsored an artistic project to further strengthen cooperation between the sister cities of Tijuana and San Diego, involving 700 boys and girls, 22 schools, 3 installation locations, and 12 co-sponsors and strategic partners.

The program, lasting 8 months, took place on both sides of the border, promoting the concepts of collaboration, teamwork, and freedom to further success in the development of the Mega Region (CaliBaja).

"Aves sin Paraíso" was originally created by the Oaxacan artist Manuel Molina to raise awareness about bird trafficking. The initiative involves the creation of wooden birds covered with corn husks and painted with vibrant colors.

Vesta adopted and transformed it into a binational program with broad participation from industrial real estate actors, organizations, governments, and school entities from both cities.

The artist personally worked with 350 Mexican children from the 12 participating schools, under the direction of the Secretariat of Education of Tijuana, and trained art teachers who, in turn, worked with 350 American children from 10 schools endorsed by the San Diego Unified School District.

The highlight of the program was the display of the colorful birds at three locations: 2nd Street in downtown Tijuana, the CBX border bridge in November 2018, and the Liberty Station cultural and commercial center in San Diego in January 2019.

Vesta expresses gratitude for the donations, volunteering, coordination, and organization from its strategic partners: Sentre, Hermosillo y Asociados, Seica, Ware Malcomb, Joe Smith, Smart Border Coalition, NTC Foundation and its Arts District, RLJonesCustomHouse, San Diego Unified School District, and the XXII City Council of Tijuana.

The success of the program was reflected in the joy of the children, not only during the creation of the birds but also when they became part of their first exhibition as artists, sharing Manuel Molina's artistic generosity. The children inspire us to create a better future through collaboration and teamwork, to dream big, and to soar freely.
