On September 19th, one of the most serious damages caused by the earthquake was suffered by schools. Nearly a year after the earthquake, according to the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, there are still 2,916 schools that have not received attention, 14.5% of which have damages.

Such is the case of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez Elementary School, located in the community of Chiquixpac, in the municipality of Santiago Tianguistenco, which has a population of around 300 people.

The school, which had an enrollment of 170 students, had 7 classrooms, 1 media room, administrative offices, space for physical education materials, a dining area with a kitchen, and restroom facilities. After the earthquake, the student enrollment decreased to 158, including 20 students with intellectual disabilities, ADHD, or speech delays who receive special support.

All the spaces were affected by the earthquake, except for the media room. The school was rendered unusable, but the parents did not stand idle. With their own resources and hands, they built 6 wooden classrooms with metal roofs, becoming the first school in the municipality to resume classes.

Why help them? It is part of our Responsible Citizenship pillar, specifically in the area of Community Development, to provide them with better living conditions and the opportunity for social mobility. This has led us to build houses and classrooms in the past. Our mission now is more ambitious.

We have invited clients and suppliers to join us in the task of rebuilding this school, so that students have the appropriate infrastructure to learn and develop their skills. Would you like to participate by providing labor, materials, or a donation? Please email sustainability@vesta.com.mx

We believe that this community deserves a second chance, and that the future of these children deserves it above all else.
